Mrs Yvonne Wilkinson, Head of King Edward VI Five Ways School has kindly offered her thoughts on our new admissions proposals.
“We believe the new admissions proposals set out by The King Edward VI Academy Trust Birmingham support our goal of becoming a more balanced coeducational community. They will also strengthen our diversity, reflecting more accurately the city which we serve.
The proposed admissions criteria will not change the inclusive ethos and high academic standards of Five Ways, but will enable us to better fulfil our responsibilities to high-attaining boys and girls of all backgrounds in this part of the city.
With a more local focus, the current long travel times of some of our students will reduce, ensuring that they do not arrive at school in the morning fatigued by a long, congested cross city journey but rather will enjoy better wellbeing in school, including being able to access our rich 'out of hours' extra-curricular opportunities.
King Edward VI Five Ways has been engaged for several years in a range of outreach programmes with local primary schools and the proposed admissions policy will consolidate and strengthen these relationships. We will be better able to support a successful transition from primary to secondary within our catchment area. This will also encourage greater parental engagement in school life.
In short, King Edward VI Five Ways sees these new proposals as an opportunity to build upon its reputation for excellence for all by becoming a thriving school at the heart of south west Birmingham.”
