Iftar across the Foundation: A celebration of community and togetherness

March saw the month of Ramadan, a time where most Muslims fast between dawn and sunset. Fasting allows for people to devote themselves to their faith, and it is thought to teach self-discipline and act as reminder of the less fortunate.

During Ramadan, it is common to have one meal known as Suhoor, just before dawn and another, known as Iftar, directly after sunset. In the spirit of togetherness, many schools across our Foundation hosted Iftar gatherings aimed to foster unison, understanding and solidarity amongst our communities.

King Edward VI King's Norton School for Boys welcomed 96 guests on the 14th March from the school community, representing diverse backgrounds, for their 2nd Big Iftar. Students from Year 10 and 11 delivered a presentation on Ramadan, its origins, what it means for Muslims and how it transcends faith to foster empathy for those less fortunate. The content was curated by the school's ED&I Ambassadors for assemblies and then delivered to guests on the evening of the Big Iftar along with a Kutbah (sermon).

The delicious food was provided by MKB Catering in Bordesley Green—the samosas, kebabs, vegetable pilau, and mutton curry were a huge hit, and people were even sent home with a pack-up! A cake was donated by friends of the community and was enjoyed by all. The school was able to raise £210.58 for their charity - West Midlands Air Ambulance through the generosity of guests.

King Edward VI Lordswood School for Girls' RE department hosted their first ever Iftar event, welcoming 100 students from across the local community, as well as staff. Included in the event was catered food, chai tea a photo booth and call to prayer. Those who don't usually celebrate Ramadan saw it as a valuable and enjoyable learning experience.

King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls' Academy, King Edward VI High School for Girls and King Edward's School were among those that also held events at their schools, resulting in some fantastic collaboration and community building. Photographs from these events can be seen in our gallery.
