King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School For Boys recently welcomed two primary schools for interactive workshops. St Matthew’s C of E Primary School and Sledmere Primary School both brought pupils to attend STEM workshops designed to give them a flavour of what KS3 is like.
To begin with the pupils attended a Design & Technology workshop in which they designed their own pen and pencil holder using the school’s new design studio and laser machine. They also got the chance to watch the cutting-edge 3D printer in action as looked at tools and toys the machine had previously made.
After a break and refreshments, they began a tour of the school followed by a science workshop. During this exercise they looked inside cells using powerful microscopes, used Bunsen burners to carry out flame tests and learned how fire works. They were also able watch exploding hydrogen balloons and had the chance to make their own sparklers.
Finally, both schools were given more refreshments and information about the 11+ familiarisation programme. We would like to thank both schools for attending and Mr F. Ahmen & Mr D. Bansal for organising these great events!
