Handsworth Wood Girls’ Academy Celebrate Black History Month

[caption id="attachment_10370" align="alignleft" width="224"] Tudor Trumpeter, John Blanke[/caption] October is Black History Month, providing a fantastic opportunity to recognise the outstanding contributions people of African and Caribbean descent have made throughout time. King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls' Academy have been doing exactly that via a range of different lessons, assemblies and form time discussions. During their history lessons, students have been covering many topics, focussing on black lives and experiences and examining some of the most significant figures in black culture. Year 7 have been looking at migration and diversity, researching family histories and the wider contributions of different cultures to shaping the history of Britain. Year 8 have focussed on Black Tudors, in particular the free black people in Tudor England before the prejudices of later centuries had been constructed. More specifically, the students have looked at the life of Tudor trumpeter, John Blanke.
