Apprenticeships – a great opportunity for work-based learning

Ali Bretherton, Head of Organisational Development at the Foundation Office, has put together a comprehensive guide, covering the range of work-based learning on offer through our apprenticeship programme to all staff across the Foundation.

An action that arose from the recent Staff Working Conditions and Wellbeing Survey was to provide and further develop internal and external CPD opportunities, of which apprenticeships are a prime example. The below covers a host of information including what an apprenticeship is, how long it lasts, what types of programmes are available, as well as how to apply:

What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a great paid work opportunity for anyone over the ages of 16 who is:

- Early in their career
- Looking to upskill in their current job role - great to support CPD
- Looking for a career-change

An apprenticeship provides an opportunity for an employee to learn and gain valuable, on the job experience. Apprentices spend at least 20% of their working hours completing classroom-based learning with a college, university or training provider which leads to a nationally recognised qualification.

What level of recognised qualification does an apprenticeship offer?
We can offer qualifications from Level 2 up to Level 7 programmes, these range from A-Level up to Master's Degree.

What are the benefits of our staff attending an apprenticeship?
- Experience and skills development
- The opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification, full funded
- Benefits of on-the-job training
- Access to industry expertise as part of the programme

How long does an apprenticeship last?
A minimum of 12 months and can last up to 48 months for those undertaking degree level programmes.

How does the 20% of my working hours count towards an apprenticeship?
In order to complete an apprenticeship time must be made during working hours each week to undertake some learning. An apprentice must evidence this with their training provider. Lots of types of learning can count towards the achievement of 20% off the job learning; this includes time spent in meetings, 1-2-1's with line managers, attending webinars/online training, listening to podcasts, any developmental conversation with a colleague, time spent writing assignments for the apprenticeship etc.

The types of programmes we offer are as follows:

How do I apply to undertake an apprenticeship?
