Prize Essay Competition on Health and Society

The Health and Society Essay Prize is open to Year 12 or Lower 6th students in the King Edward VI Foundation Birmingham. The aim of the prize is to encourage students to reflect on foundational issues in public health and on the intersections between health and society.

Health and Society is a special one-day conference aimed at Y12 students across the King Edward’s Foundation. Taking place on Saturday 20 May, it will feature talks from leading academics in the history and philosophy of public health studies. Drawing from a range of disciplines and perspectives, we aim to consider what a healthy society should look like.

In preparation for the conference, we are launching a prize essay competition to explore and examine the
following two questions:

1. What role should technology have in a healthy society?
2. Who is responsible for health in society, the individual or the state?

Essays must be between 1,600 and 2,000 words long, on one topic to be chosen from the questions. We
encourage students to provide references and to include a bibliography. Students can only submit one essay.

Essays should be word processed and submitted by email in either Word or PDF format to [email protected]

The first prize is 100 pounds in National Book Tokens.

Finalists will also have the optional opportunity to present their own academic-style papers at the Health and Society conference on Saturday 20 May, and to have their work published in conference proceedings.

Submission Deadline: Monday 27 February 2023
