Commonwealth Games Boxer visits King Edward VI Balaam Wood Academy

On Friday 10th June, King Edward VI Balaam Wood Academy welcomed DJ - a super-heavyweight boxer who will be competing in the fast-approaching Commonwealth Games this year. DJ worked with pupils involved in the afterschool Boxing Enrichment Club, delivering a motivational talk and sharing his own journey.

25-year-old Delicious Orie, or DJ as he known, grew up in Russia, but admits there were very few opportunities for black people in the country and so his family decided to move to Wolverhampton, where he instantly developed a passion for sport.

The Aston University Economics graduate has trained with the likes of Anthony Joshua and considers him a huge influence: "AJ's given me tips about weight management, ring craft, when to throw in a jab and to think he's someone I was watching on TV who is now giving me advice is a big thing."

He has now been returning the favour, inspiring the pupils of King Edward VI Balaam Wood Academy by sharing how he has overcome personal challenges and encouraging pupils to be resilient with a positive mindset. Pupils were then given the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session with DJ where he imparted more knowledge for pupils to take away with them.

Following the talk, pupils were invited to join a practical demo and training as part of their after school Boxing Enrichment Session, with DJ putting those involved though their paces with support of Mr Makhani who delivers the after school sessions.

We wish DJ the best of luck in the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
