End of year Reflections – what are your CPD needs for the year ahead?

Have you thought about one of our funded programmes?

As we look to the start of the next academic year ahead and continue to reflect on opportunities for further CPD over the summer, you may wish to consider the benefits that undertaking a fully funded apprenticeship programme may bring.

We have over 40 apprenticeship programmes for schools available in Leadership and Management, Business Administration, Financial Management, Digital Skills, Facilities Management, Sports Coaching, Teaching and Pastoral, Technician, Careers Advisory and School Business Management skills.

Staff can access a full list of programmes through our apprenticeship hub, see link:  Apprenticeships - The Schools of King Edward VI in Birmingham.

Here is some of the feedback we have received over the last year from our staff in relation to our programmes, and the benefit of seeking an apprenticeship:

"While studying for an apprenticeship I am able to apply what I learn to show the real-world application of what I am learning”

“The best part about my apprenticeship, and apprenticeships in general, is that it gives me access to diverse challenges that enable me to further develop my skills, while working on real life tasks.”

“The apprenticeship will give me the fundamental knowledge and experience to further develop within the IT field, enabling access to specialised courses and further study, opening up options within the IT career path.”

“I now understand different leadership styles and what makes an effective leader. How to manage people in different circumstances”

“My emotional intelligence has developed; I am more empathetic and understanding of individual circumstances What makes a successful team and how to motivate them.”

“My Tutor is brilliant. He is knowledgeable, encourages lateral thinking and independent study but supports when needed.”

Some schools have appointed Digital Apprentices. Here is what the Headteachers have said about the experience:

'We were amongst the first wave of Foundation schools to employ an apprentice. My previous school was well-established in this field, and I knew that apprentices offer incredible enthusiasm and a desire to learn for their employers. I wasn't let down with our employment of Josh Brady as an IT apprentice. Josh has learnt vast amounts through on-the-job learning and has offered to the school a flexible and enthusiastic approach to working. It was one the best HR successes of the year.''

"Our Digital Apprentice is such an asset to our school. He has shown a commitment to his development, supported by his line manager, which is truly noteworthy. Our staff and pupils have benefitted from his contribution, and we now look forward to Reid being a valued colleague for years to come."

What can an apprenticeship programme offer me?

Apprenticeships provide a fantastic way to improve your skills and knowledge. They combine work with practical, on and off the job training and study, all of which is fully funded from the Foundation’s apprenticeship levy funds.

Applying to any member of staff over the age of sixteen, apprenticeships are on offer to all existing employed staff to help them with their CPD. This includes either those who are seeking a promotion or, those who are being developed into a new role. Apprenticeships also apply to newly appointed staff.

Offering many benefits to school staff, our programmes provide a means to grow internal talent.

The benefits include and are not limited to:

  • Generating new skills, providing opportunities to upskill all employed staff.
  • Reducing staff turnover and improving retention and succession planning.
  • Providing the opportunity to gain industry-recognised qualifications.
  • Supporting a culture of lifelong learning.
  • Growing the next generation of school leaders
  • Providing a means of fully funding professional qualifications.
  • Improving staff productivity and motivation.
  • Opening new career and job role opportunities for staff across the Foundation.
