At King Edward VI Handsworth School for Girls, students are embracing neurodiversity with creativity, compassion, and purpose. Each Monday lunchtime, while most of the school takes a well-earned break, the Learning Hub transforms into a hive of curiosity and conversation. The reason? Outside the Box, a student-led initiative that is making a meaningful difference.
Founded in 2023 by former student Annabel, Outside the Box was created to raise awareness of neurodiverse conditions, promote mental well-being, and foster a more inclusive school community. Now in the hands of a passionate new leadership team, Emina, Afreen, and Nimrah, the initiative continues to thrive.
With the support of SEND Coordinator Angela Lomas, the students have curated a programme of engaging sessions, including thought-provoking presentations, interactive workshops, and lively discussions. Each week offers pupils a safe, welcoming space to learn, reflect, and celebrate the diverse ways our minds work.
At its heart, Outside the Box is about more than awareness, it's about creating a culture where differences are recognised, respected, and embraced. Through their ongoing work, these young changemakers are helping to shape a school environment where everyone feels seen, supported, and empowered.
