LED/SolarPV Project Update
As a major step in reducing energy consumption, we plan to replace most of the conventional lighting at our schools and Foundation Office with LEDs during the Summer holidays. As King Edward VI Northfield School for Girls already has full LED lighting, we will be installing solarPV on their roof at the same time.
The appointment of a contractor to project manage the work is being made this week.
They will start surveying and specifying the required LEDs/solarPV design, followed by contracting the installation company who will provide a final quote to complete a full installation. We’ll then review how much SCA funding can be awarded to contribute to get as much work done as possible during the Summer holidays. Any work outstanding will then be budgeted and scheduled for future holiday periods.
Energy Sparks
Energy Sparks are sending weekly energy analysis reports to the schools after receiving access to the schools' energy meter data.
These reports are highlighting where schools are making progress or where they may be able to take steps to reduce their usage: saving money and reducing carbon emissions. The company are also providing a dashboard summary of energy usage which the schools can display and share with pupils and staff, complete with energy saving opportunities. Unfortunately, Energy Sparks are advising, as a charity, they will shortly lose their Government funding, and so from September, schools will have to pay annually to keep this service, typically around £500 per annum.
Zero Waste to Landfill at Camp Hill Schools
We are supporting Camp Hill Schools with their aim of zero waste to landfill.
All of our Academy Trust schools are being asked to identify their waste streams generated, so collectively, we can identify opportunities to improve waste management efficiency, possibly save money and reduce carbon emissions.
Battery Recycling Boxes
A waste battery recycling collection system has been introduced to our schools that is free of charge to use. This enables schools to recycle small batteries such as AA’s, AAA’s, 9v etc. They can be deposited in a collection box that is centrally located at the school, then collected when full. The waste batteries are then sustainably processed instead of going to landfill where they can take over 100 years to decompose.
