On Monday 23 June 2025, Bob Lang, Teacher of Geography at King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls, led a dynamic CPD day on GIS (Geographical Information Systems) for teachers from across the King Edward VI Foundation, as well as members of the Worcestershire and Gloucestershire branches of the Geographical Association (GA).
Held in collaboration with Dr Cheryl Jones and Elena Lengthorn from the University of Worcester, the event brought together 22 geography educators for a hands-on day of learning, exploration, and innovation. The training was made possible thanks to funding from the GA’s Sheila Jones Legacy Fund, which covered printed resources and refreshments for attendees.
Throughout the day, teachers explored a range of geospatial tools and software, including ESRI's ArcGIS Online and Survey123. Sessions covered everything from basic to advanced GIS applications, with practical demonstrations on how to incorporate these tools into fieldwork activities, from data collection to presentation and analysis.
Participants examined real-world examples such as microclimate investigations and cross-curricular applications, including population studies, food distribution, voting patterns, and biodiversity. A final session focused on building progression in GIS skills, offering guidance on curriculum planning, personal development, and careers education.
To support continued professional development, a follow-up session will be held in the autumn term to review progress and share resources developed by participants since the training.
This enriching day reflected the Foundation’s commitment to innovative teaching and professional collaboration, equipping educators with the tools to bring geography to life in the classroom and beyond.
