March 8th marks International Women's Day (IWD), a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Many events take place worldwide as people come together to celebrate women's achievements and rally for women's equality.
The campaign theme for 2021 is 'Choose to Challenge'. From the International Women's Day website: "A challenged world is an alert world. And from challenge comes change. So let's all #ChooseToChallenge".
Our schools got involved in a variety of different ways to mark the occasion. King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls Year 11 student, Erin Marsh, has written an article on IWD, looking at the history of the event, which dates back to 1911, whilst also speaking of how it has evolved over the last 100 years. You can read Erin's article

Sarah Froggat, Careers Leader at King Edward VI Five Ways School, organised several talks to be given to students from alumni and Universities that took place across the whole week. Sam Uren, Amy Sutherland and Emma Griffin, all King Edward VI Five Ways School alumni, gave various talks on women in engineering, finance and veterinary care.
A talk from Coventry University, aimed at Sixth Form students based around women in STEM was also given and students were encouraged to sign up for a range of talks being given by individuals at Exeter University.
King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls' Academy also ran sessions over the week, with special lessons delivered through PSHE and a themed 'Welcome Back' assembly led by Zarah Sultana MP, who attended King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School's Sixth Form when she was younger. She spoke of her journey from Lozells to Westminster.
