The King Edward VI Five Ways School magazine was relaunched earlier this year in it's new and hugely impressive format as The Grapevine. Following this, the student editorial team that create the publication chose to enter a national competition run by the Stationers' Company, pitting them against the fiercest of competition from other schools across the country.
The magazine was shortlisted for awards in three categories, meaning that a representative team of the students involved was invited to the awards day in London on 27th June.
Four members of The Grapevine's brilliant editorial team went to represent the magazine: Grace Banks; Tara Clark; Elena Parry; and Mehul Patel. Also invited was Fynn Rose, who was shortlisted for his individual article on the background to Russia's war in Ukraine.
The day offered the students the chance to attend a range of valuable workshops within the fields of journalism and publishing.
There was also the chance to network with some real titans of the industry, such as the executive editor of Elle magazine, as well as some therapeutic time mastering the basics of traditional bookbinding.
Ed Turner, Assistant Director of Sixth Form at King Edward VI Five Ways, comments: "Merely to be shortlisted and invited to the awards in the publication's first year after relaunch was a major coup for all involved, given how stiff the national competition was. We were therefore delighted to win in two categories and be highly commended in a third".
The commendation came for the sustainable nature of the publication, being printed on recycled materials and using vegetable-based inks. Fynn won in his category of 'Best piece on a Designated Topic' and the magazine as a whole won in the category of 'Best overall content'.
"This final win is especially pleasing, as it celebrates the collective contribution of a very extensive team of remarkably talented young people. We are very proud of them all". As the citation in the 'Best Overall Content' win reads, 'The Grapevine is everything a school magazine should be.'
We couldn't agree more and we warmly congratulate all students involved in achieving this richly deserved and highly prestigious national recognition.
