King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls' Academy Teacher of Maths, Abed Ahmed has been awarded Teacher of the Year by The National Association of Special Educational Needs - the leading organisation promoting the advancement of all individuals with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.
Abed was put forward for the award by a friend of his last year. He wasn't aware of this until receiving an email letting him know that he had been shortlisted and was invited to attend the awards, held in London on the 15th October 2021.
Abed was presented the award by British comedian, Dominic Holland, for his services to education, especially for young people who stammer. Abed runs Mr ST's Stammer Support Group - an initiative of online Zoom sessions for 5 to 16-year-olds who have a stammer or speech impairment - which he leads alongside King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls' Academy's own stammer support group.
Annamarie Hassall MBE, Chief Executive of nasen said: "Abed should be extremely proud of what he has achieved. I am thrilled to be able to spotlight his hard work and inclusive best practice supporting pupils who have a stammer or speech disorder. This work is not only benefitting pupils at King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls' Academy but also the wider education and SEND sector who can be inspired by Abed's passion and tenacity for making a difference".
