‘Cutting Edge Careers’ Workshop

Join the Royal College of Surgeons of England for a day of interactive activities and the chance to find out more about surgical career paths.

In partnership with the King Edward VI Foundation, each school is invited to book up to six Year 9 and/or Year 10 pupils on to the "Cutting Edge Careers" Workshop, taking place on Saturday 7th May at King Edward's School.

There will be a plenary/Q&A session for all participants, followed by hands-on activities (including knot tying and suturing, "speed mentoring" with medical students, the chance to have a go on a keyhole surgery and ultrasound training devices, and a giant version of the game Operation. The College is aware of the age of pupils (Years 9 and 10) and so all the presentations and activities will be pitched at the right level. Following the event, participating schools will be linked up with local surgery contacts at the College and university Surgical Societies (there are various societies across Birmingham and Aston unis) so they always have someone they can contact if a pupil wants to find out more about surgery as a career option.

The objective is to reach students from groups that are under-represented in surgery (including those from disadvantaged backgrounds), and the College will ensure diversity of background through the speakers and session leaders on the day.

Careers advisers at Foundation schools already have details of the event and are considering which students may benefit from attending. To avoid the event being filled up by students who would usually sign up quickly for something like this, we are encouraging a more personal approach in invitations, rather than publicising the event widely and running a first-come, first-served booking process. If you know of any students who may benefit, please speak to your school's careers adviser.
