Day in the life of…

As stated in our recent article, the King Edward VI Foundation entered into a partnership with Selly Oak Trust School to provide supported internships in education.

Toby and James have taken up this opportunity at King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls. They started their respective internships in September 2023 and have fed back that they are enjoying the variety of tasks and meeting new people.

We caught up with Toby and James to discuss what a typical working day looks like to them:

Arriving at the school for 9am, the interns have a debrief with their Job Coach to discuss the day ahead and any concerns that they may have.

As an Intern, Toby works with the Porters three days a week, helping with jobs such as room set-ups, general maintenance and checking that everything around the site is safe and working properly. The other two days of the week, Toby spends with Cleaning Supervisors. During the lunch period, Toby supervises the canteen in the boys’ school, making sure everything’s in order and providing support where needed.

James mainly works in the kitchen, restocking drinks, cleaning dishes, filling up the food trays, and setting up counters and hot drinks for the students at lunch time. After lunch, he cleans work areas, preparing the kitchen for the next day.

At lunch, they both eat in the staff room catching up with work colleagues before returning to the classroom to do some BTEC coursework. Before the day finishes, Toby and James keep a diary of what they have been doing during the day and have a final check-in with their Job Coach before leaving at 3pm.
