Farewell to Paul Bruten CHB (1989-2024)

As we prepare to bid farewell to a cornerstone of Camp Hill Boys' community, we take a moment to honour the remarkable journey of Paul Bruten. For 35 years, Paul has been an integral part of our school community, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of students and colleagues alike.

Paul's educational odyssey began with a fervent passion for mathematics, which he cultivated through his studies at the University of Birmingham, culminating in a mathematics degree and PGCE. In the autumn of 1989, Paul arrived as a mathematics teacher, igniting sparks of curiosity and understanding in his students that have continued to burn brightly to this day.

Throughout his tenure, Paul's unwavering enthusiasm for his subject has been a guiding light, inspiring countless young minds to embrace the beauty and complexity of mathematics. His dedication and expertise led to his appointment as Head of Mathematics in 2006, where he spearheaded innovative approaches to teaching, including the integration of technology into the classroom. In 2011 an Ofsted subject inspection of outstanding led to the department’s investigative approach to teaching being showcased in the Ofsted ‘Made to Measure’ report.

In 2013, Paul's leadership journey reached new heights with his appointment as Deputy Head Curriculum. In this role, he not only oversaw the day-to-day operations of the school but also fostered a culture of excellence and collaboration among staff and students. Under his guidance, Camp Hill Boys was graded outstanding in an Ofsted inspection, a testament to Paul's unwavering commitment and visionary leadership.

Beyond his role in academia, Paul's impact extended far beyond the classroom walls. As a coach in rugby and cricket, as well as a leader of outdoor expeditions such as ski trips and St David’s rock-climbing adventures, he instilled in students a sense of teamwork, resilience, and adventure that will stay with them for a lifetime.

Paul's legacy is not only one of professional excellence but also of personal integrity and compassion. His wise counsel, calm demeanour, and genuine care for others have left an indelible mark on our school community. As he embarks on a new chapter of his journey, returning to mathematics teaching at Torquay Boys' Grammar School, we extend our deepest gratitude and warmest wishes for continued success.

Paul Bruten, you will be greatly missed, but your impact will continue to inspire generations of learners.
