KEHS and KES Rank Among England’s Top Schools for Sport

We are thrilled to celebrate the outstanding sporting achievements of two of our schools, King Edward VI High School for Girls (KEHS) and King Edward’s School, Birmingham (KES), both of which have earned impressive rankings in the School Sport Magazine’s prestigious list of top sporting schools in England. 

For the first time, King Edward VI High School for Girls has been ranked among the top 30 sporting schools in the country. This remarkable achievement places KEHS among the best in England, reflecting the dedication and hard work of its students, staff, and coaches. Over the past year, the school has enjoyed a number of exceptional sporting successes, including national finals in cricket, squash, tennis, and badminton. Notable highlights include the U14 tennis and badminton teams finishing in 3rd place in their respective National Finals, as well as the U13 cricket team securing 3rd place at the National Indoor Finals at Lord’s. Additionally, KEHS had an impressive 97 fixtures played, with over 210 pupils proudly representing the school in sports such as netball, hockey, and badminton. The netball teams, in particular, shone brightly, with the U14 team winning their county tournament and qualifying for Regionals, while the U15 team made it through to the second round of the National Bowl. Hockey also brought excitement, with both the U14 and U18 teams achieving strong regional performances. 

Sarah Blanks, KEHS Director of Sport, expressed her pride in the achievement: “Being ranked among the top 30 best sporting schools in the country for the first time is a fantastic achievement. Sport plays an integral role in school life, and this recognition highlights the dedication, talent, and teamwork of our pupils, staff, and coaches.” 

Meanwhile, King Edward’s School has been ranked 9th in the country, making it the only Birmingham school in the top 10. KES had an o

 

utstanding year in 2024, with numerous sporting triumphs across various disciplines. Highlights include the 1st XV rugby team winning their group at the Rosslyn Park National 7s, reaching the U18 Schools Vase National Semi-Final, and the U13A cricket team becoming National Runners-Up and County Champions. The U14 squash team also made waves as National Runners-Up, and the Year 7 and 8 tennis team placed third in the National Championships. In addition, two boys from KES joined the prestigious Warwickshire County Cricket Club Academy, marking a fantastic year for sport at the school.

Sport is a vital part of life at King Edward’s, and we are committed to providing our boys with every opportunity to excel. I am immensely proud of our pupils for their dedication and performance in fixtures over the past year.” 

Both KEHS and KES have demonstrated exceptional sporting talent and commitment, earning their well-deserved places on the top schools list. These achievements reflect not only the individual excellence of the students but also the hard work and support from their dedicated coaches and staff.
