Reflections From Hajj

Earlier this month, during Hajj (4–9 June 2025), Fazle Kinkhabwala completed the sacred Islamic pilgrimage—a deeply personal and spiritual journey that offered profound insights into leadership, service, and community. The experience continues to shape his approach to governance and leadership across the King Edward VI Foundation.

Here, Fazle shares four enduring lessons from Hajj that resonate far beyond the spiritual realm - lessons that speak to the heart of leadership, purpose, and collective strength.

  1. Sincerity of Intention

Hajj is filled with moments of stillness - pauses at sacred sites where pilgrims are asked to simply be present. In those quiet moments, Fazle was reminded that intentions matter. Every ritual is performed with sincerity, seeking only the pleasure of God.

In leadership, this translates to acting with authenticity and purpose. When our decisions are grounded in genuine intent, we build trust - with our teams, our communities, and those we serve.

  1. The Power of Introspection

Hajj is also a time for deep reflection and seeking forgiveness. It taught Fazle the value of looking inward with honesty and humility.

In professional life, introspection helps leaders grow. It encourages accountability, fosters resilience, and nurtures a culture of continuous learning - qualities essential to effective governance and inclusive leadership.

  1. Community is Our Strength

During Hajj, millions gather from around the world, united in purpose. When Fazle’s wife, Anika, fell ill during the pilgrimage, it was the young women around them who stepped in with compassion and strength.

This experience reinforced a powerful truth: no one leads alone. Strong communities - whether in schools, workplaces, or faith groups - are built on empathy, shared purpose, and mutual support.

  1. Resilience in the Face of Adversity

Despite serious illness, Anika was determined to complete the pilgrimage. Her strength, even while fasting and physically weak, was extraordinary. A doctor later called it a miracle.

That moment reminded Fazle that resilience is not the absence of struggle - it’s the courage to continue despite it. In leadership, challenges are inevitable. But with clarity of purpose and the support of others, we can overcome them.

These lessons - sincerity, introspection, community, and resilience—are not just spiritual reflections. They are leadership principles. They shape how we show up, how we lead, and how we serve.

Fazle hopes these reflections inspire others to lead with purpose and compassion, wherever they are on their journey.
