The King Edward VI Foundation student diversity and equality committee was launched last term, with representation from all eleven schools. As part of their initial work, the committee requested that headteachers invite their staff and pupils to rate its draft mission statement and provide an optional short comment.
The survey closed on 4th December, with 2030 responses. 1953 gave a score of 3 or more out of 5 for the mission statement, with 69% giving a score of 5. The average score was 4.53.
As the majority signalled support of the statement, only two small changes were made in response to comments received. These are highlighted in the committee’s finalised mission:
We believe that all members of our community are entitled to be treated fairly and equally regardless of their race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sex, sexuality, or disability. Our purpose is to challenge discrimination in all its forms so that our students can achieve educational excellence.
Further details of survey responses and comments can be found in this short analysis. If you have comments, or are interested in the student and the governor and staff committees’ work, or indeed in any aspect of inclusion, do participate in the Inclusion Basecamp group.
The committee are next turning their attention to the KS3 curriculum, starting with these seven subjects and asking teachers for input. Make sure you’re participating in the Basecamp groups for your subject/s, particularly: Art and Creative Design, Drama, English, Geography, History, PSHE, and RE.
